During 1982 the united states mint switched from making 95% pure copper pennies to making 97.5% zinc pennies. The pennies that are 95% copper, the ones made prior to 1982, are worth over 2 cents each in copper value. This means that the value of the metal (in this case copper) in the penny is worth twice the coins face value. People have been saving copper pennies for years, but not until recently has industrial equipment become available to separate the pennies on a large scale. The pre-1982 copper penny will be almost nonexistent in circulated use in the very near future.
